Amazon Prime costs $139 per year ($14.99/month if you pay monthly) in the US. The price has gone up twice in three years — it was $119/year in 2022 — and Amazon has quietly added ads to Prime Video for members who don't pay an extra $2.99/month to remove them. So the question of whether Prime is worth it has gotten more complicated.

The short answer: Prime is worth it if you order from Amazon at least once or twice a month and use Prime Video regularly. It's not worth it if you mainly want ad-free streaming — there are better and cheaper options for that specifically.

Prime is a bundle of services, not just fast shipping. The main components:

Benefit What You Get Worth It Standalone?
Free shipping Free 1–2 day delivery on eligible items, free same-day in select cities Yes — if you order 2+ times/month
Prime Video Streaming with ads (ad-free costs $2.99/month extra) Moderate — library is strong but ads are a regression
Prime Music 2 million songs ad-free (limited vs Spotify/Apple) No — very limited catalog
Prime Reading Rotating selection of free Kindle books and magazines Marginal — selection is limited
Prime Gaming Free games monthly + Twitch channel sub Yes — if you game on PC
Amazon Photos Unlimited full-resolution photo storage Yes — if you need cloud photo backup
Whole Foods discounts Extra 10% off sale items at Whole Foods Yes — if you shop there regularly

The Math: Breaking Down the Value

At $139/year, you're paying $11.58/month. The shipping benefit alone makes the math work if you order regularly. Amazon's standard shipping on non-Prime orders typically costs $5.99–$8.99 per order. If you make two orders per month, you're spending roughly $144–$216/year on shipping without Prime — already more than the membership fee.

Add Prime Video (with ads), which is equivalent to a basic streaming tier worth around $7–8/month standalone, and the bundle math gets very favorable for regular Amazon shoppers.

The Ads Problem

In early 2024, Amazon added ads to Prime Video for all subscribers and began charging $2.99/month extra to remove them. This is effectively a price increase on the streaming component of Prime. If you want the same experience Prime Video offered before 2024, you're now paying $139 + $35.88/year = $174.88/year — a 26% increase over the 2022 price.

For most people, the ads are tolerable (fewer than a traditional TV broadcast). But if ad-free streaming is your priority, Netflix Basic with Ads at $7/month or Disney+ ad-free at $14/month offer more content per dollar than Prime Video ad-free at the marginal price.

Who Should Get Prime (and Who Shouldn't)

Situation Verdict
Order from Amazon 2+ times/month Worth it — shipping savings alone justify the cost
Shop Amazon occasionally (1x/month or less) Borderline — do the math on your actual orders
Want it mainly for streaming Skip — Netflix, Max, or Disney+ offer more for less
PC gamer who uses Twitch Worth it — Prime Gaming adds significant value
Whole Foods shopper Worth it — 10% off adds up fast on weekly shops
Student Yes — Prime Student is $7.49/month or $69/year with a .edu email

Alternatives Worth Considering

If shipping is the main draw: Walmart+ ($98/year) offers free shipping on Walmart.com orders with no minimum and free delivery from stores. It's cheaper and covers a comparable range of everyday items.

If streaming is the main draw: Netflix Standard ($15.49/month) or Disney+/Hulu bundle ($14.99/month) give you better content depth without the shipping tie-in.

The Verdict

Amazon Prime is worth $139/year if you're a regular Amazon shopper. The shipping value alone covers the cost for anyone ordering twice a month or more. Prime Video with ads is a decent bonus, not a headline reason to subscribe. If Amazon shopping isn't part of your routine, the math doesn't work — the streaming and music components aren't competitive with dedicated services at the same price.
