Apple confirmed the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its Surprise and Shine event on September 9, 2026 — the first keynote led by new CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook eight days prior. Both Pro models start $100 higher than last year, introduce Apple’s first 2nm chip, a variable-aperture camera, and storage options up to 2TB for the first time on an iPhone. Apple also unveiled its first foldable iPhone, officially named the iPhone Duo, shipping in October. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are delayed to spring 2027.

The split launch is a first for Apple. Anyone wanting a new iPhone this September faces a premium-only lineup. Budget buyers will need to wait until spring 2027 or consider the outgoing iPhone 17 range at discounted prices.

A20 Pro: Apple’s First 2nm Chip

The A20 Pro is Apple’s first chip built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Apple’s own figures claim approximately 18% faster CPU performance and 30% better power efficiency compared to the A19 Pro. The 2nm node allows more transistors in the same die area, which translates to both speed gains and improved battery life — the more efficient the chip, the less energy it draws during sustained tasks. Real-world battery life improvements are expected to be meaningful, particularly on the Pro Max with its larger cell.

The A20 Pro also integrates the Neural Engine for on-device Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27. Apple has expanded the on-device model size significantly, meaning more AI tasks complete without sending data to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers.

Variable Aperture Camera: What It Actually Means

The variable aperture camera is the headline hardware feature of the iPhone 18 Pro generation. On previous iPhones, the aperture is fixed — the lens opening cannot change size. A variable aperture lens (f/1.4 to f/2.8 on the 18 Pro) physically adjusts the size of the opening, letting in more light in dark conditions and stopping down to achieve sharper depth of field in bright conditions. This mirrors how professional camera lenses work and is a first for any iPhone.

In practice, variable aperture gives the iPhone 18 Pro meaningfully better low-light performance than prior fixed-aperture iPhone cameras, and more control over background blur without relying entirely on computational photography. Whether the variable aperture is exclusive to the Pro Max or present on both Pro models was not definitively confirmed in Apple’s press release at time of publication.

Apple C2 Modem: The End of Qualcomm in Pro iPhones

The iPhone 18 Pro replaces the Qualcomm modem used in the iPhone 17 Pro with Apple’s own C2 modem. The C2 brings a privacy-focused Limit Precise Location feature that prevents mobile networks from determining your exact address-level location, reducing your location data footprint with carriers. Battery life also benefits from the C2’s lower power draw compared to the Qualcomm unit it replaces. eSIM-only models gain additional battery capacity because the space previously used by the physical SIM tray now holds more battery cells — eSIM variants get approximately two more hours of video playback than the physical SIM versions.

iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone

Apple officially named its first foldable the iPhone Duo. It folds to approximately 5.5 inches closed and opens to around 7.8 inches — competing directly with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel Pro Fold. The iPhone Duo comes in two color options: Star White and Night Sky. Pre-orders open October 16, 2026, with availability from October 23.

Apple has not published full specs for the Duo in its press release as of September 9. Pricing starts at approximately $2,000, making it Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever. Supply constraints are expected at launch — analysts are advising that pre-ordering early will be more critical this cycle than any recent iPhone generation.

Should You Buy the iPhone 18 Pro or Wait?

Buy iPhone 18 Pro if… Wait or consider alternatives if…
You’re on iPhone 15 Pro or older — A20 Pro is a meaningful generational jump You’re on iPhone 17 Pro — 18% faster CPU is hard to justify at $1,199
Variable aperture camera and low-light photography matter to you You want the standard iPhone 18 at a lower price — wait until spring 2027
2TB storage resolves a genuine capacity problem Budget is your primary concern — iPhone 17 Pro will drop in price this month
You want iOS 27’s full Apple Intelligence feature set You prefer Android — the Samsung S26 Ultra at $961 is the direct competitor
You want Apple’s first foldable — buy the Duo in October First-gen foldable risk concerns you — wait for iPhone Duo 2 in 2027

iPhone 18 Pro vs Samsung S26 Ultra: The Quick Take

The iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 and the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra at ~$961 are the two flagship smartphones competing directly for buyers right now. The S26 Ultra is $238 cheaper, runs Android, includes an S Pen, and has the world’s first built-in Privacy Display. The iPhone 18 Pro has the A20 Pro chip, a variable aperture camera, Apple’s privacy-focused C2 modem, and the iOS 27 / Apple Intelligence ecosystem. Ecosystem choice remains the deciding factor for most buyers. For a full spec-by-spec breakdown, see our Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra review.

The Verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro is Apple’s strongest Pro upgrade in several years. The A20 Pro on 2nm, the variable aperture camera, the in-house C2 modem, and storage up to 2TB make a genuinely compelling case for anyone on iPhone 15 Pro or older. The $1,199 starting price — $100 up from last year — is the main friction point. Pre-orders open September 12 at 5am PT and the phone goes on sale September 18.

The iPhone Duo foldable is an extraordinary first-gen product on paper. At $2,000 and with supply constraints expected, first-gen caution is warranted unless you specifically want to be early on Apple’s foldable platform.
